As we interact with our world, we become familiar with aspects of our environment: people, objects, concepts. How does this sense of familiarity develop? What are the neural and computational mechanisms that drive the experience of familiarity? How can machine learning inform our understanding of these mechanisms? My goal is to explore these questions using a wide range of methodologies—from machine learning to neuroimaging—and use this insight to develop technology that can build upon our experience of familiarity.
