Not only do we see meaningful structure in our visual environments, but we also have rich semantic representations of objects and concepts, which we use to create structured visual reproductions of these environments – drawings, diagrams, or maps.
What is the nature of these representations? What cognitive processes allow us to learn them? How are they useful? Can artificial agents be taught these concepts?
These are the questions my research program aims to answer.
